THE BIG SPLASH
In The Big Splash I dive under water into the mudflats of the Waddenzee, specifically the ones of the island Vlieland, to uncover what lies beneath the sediment. The mudflats, with the shell as my anchor, are a portal into memories, as I spent my childhood on these muddy watery landscapes. They remind me that memory, like sediment, accumulates in layers, with some fragments buried deeply and others resurfacing when the tides and climate shift. There is grief within me, but grief does not only belong to me, but there is also grief in the landscapes, grief in the mud, grief in the water. Writing my thesis, I found out that my fascinations into nonlinear ways of thinking and the cyclical processes of destruction and creation in nature are linked to having early experiences with death, as my father passed when i was fourteen. These moments imprinted onto my ways of thinking, to try to see that an ending is a beginning and an ending a beginning.

A heartfelt thank you to Lizzy Jongedijk for collaborating on the thesis design.
